Why I moved to Cyprus
Past October I moved to Cyprus to start my own chapter of life. I quit my job to become a freelance developer but so far it hasn’t turned out well. All thoughts started when I didn’t had any new challenge in my company, I was learning and learning day by day with mostly contributing to my own knowledge, while also contributing with tools and knowledge to my bigger project. Since I was able to lead my own team very early on with a massive amount of new learnings and speed I wanted to keep up, I was suddenly missing it in the other project Team, the bigger project team, the one already existing for multiple years.
So there was I, never really able to get a proper onboarding in that team, while being so committed and ambitious about my work and dedication. I started learning Kubernetes, Terraform, Ansible because I wanted to support our devOps team. Later it turned out we over employed, the devOps team wasn’t able to onboard and all my knowledge I gained, was shut down in a meeting where I got supported in just presenting my learnings, while being told off I am not allowed to do such thing and this is not what is needed to be done. Soon later I found myself finding out that what I have done was not wrong at all but also not perfect. I was just learning it, while not seeing the greater over all.
A new co-worker joined, the older co-worker got fired and after seeing the new kubernetes repository I have seen a lot of similarities to mine. The new co-worker was using Ansible template files to set up the master and nodes easier with one terraform deployment.
Quite annoying to see the new Kubernetes repository developing while I couldn’t really feel to be part of the team, because I never got assigned todo this task. I was able to contribute, but without proper team culture I didn’t know what they are working on, how to contribute and what needs to be done next.
So I spend my time playing with minikube, deploying my own applications into kubernetes and get used to all this complexity.
Short after I was being part of the bigger team again, my onboarding was basically me finding out tasks I can do and are needed todo. So I was working closely together with the QA team. I helped them identify already existing tests of the main application, I wrote scripts for them and contributed with a test tool, so they can test faster.
Where does the decision now came to start my company?
I have a long distance relationship and I really like to travel around, being in nice places while also actually getting things done. My partner is currently studying in london, and at the same time, the housing prices increased of my little 18m^2 flat
